Science education is a highly dynamic field of applied and basic research and of research-based development. In fifth year you can choose from various education units, including Teaching International English, Meeting the Needs of Cultural Diversity, and Responding to Diverse Needs in Schools. In the international arena, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 data show that the U.S. average mathematics assessment scores were well below the average scores of the top-performing education systems.
In the fields of hard science, the process of inquiry is more direct and finite: Take a question; use evidence to form an explanation; connect that explanation to existing knowledge; and communicate that evidence-based explanation. Experimentation based on the scientific method follows a similar course: Combine a scientific question with research to construct a hypothesis; conduct experiments to test that hypothesis; evaluate the results to draw conclusions; and communicate those conclusions.
Since 2013 we’ve invested Â£45 million in science-related professional development at the National STEM Learning CentreÂ We also regularly invest in research into continuing professional development and its impact on teachers, schools and young people. In 2011, 79% of public high school students graduated on time with a regular diploma; by 2015, the figure had climbed to 83%.
The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. To assure the vitality and continued productivity of the research enterprise, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) provides leadership in training the next generation of scientists, in enhancing the diversity of the scientific workforce and in developing research capacities throughout the country. Additional opportunities are available through the NIH Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programs.
As part of the $1.1 billion National Innovation and Science Agenda , the Australian Government has allocated over $64 million to fund early learning and school STEM initiatives under the Inspiring all Australians in Digital Literacy and STEM measure. This includes two measures: Embracing the Digital Age (school initiatives – $51 million) and Inspiring STEM Literacy (early learning initiatives – $14 million).
