Jotse is an international Journal aiming at publishing interdisciplinary research within the university education framework and it is especially focused on the fields of Technology and Science. Carey, 1985; Chi, Feltovich, and Glaser, 1981; Goswami and Brown, 1989; see also the discussion in Chapter 5 ). Not surprisingly, both children’s and adults’ scientific reasoning tends to be strongest in domains in which their knowledge is strongest. Therefore, if the goal is to advance the leading edge of children’s scientific reasoning, their instruction needs to be grounded in contexts that also build on their relatively robust understanding of content. There is also mounting evidence that knowledge of scientific explanations of the natural world is advanced through generating and evaluating scientific evidence. The Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Program funds innovative pre-kindergarten to grade 12 (P-12) science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and Informal Science Education (ISE) educational projects. Colin Johnson was the Director and CEO of Techniquest in Cardiff, Wales, from 1997 to 2004. Prior to joining the Techniquest staff in 1990, he had taught high school science, worked with pre-service and in-service teachers, authored a popular textbook, and worked in curriculum development. Johnson has been active in both ECSITE and ASTC, including serving on the ASTC Board of Directors.

In contrast, the mathematics literacy score was below the OECD average and put the United States behind 36 other education systems.
In the 1970s these national efforts to improve school programs and teacher education, including the goals for science teaching, were reassessed. The public had become disillusioned with the expenditures for science teacher enhancement and curriculum development projects. The NSF Project Synthesis effort established four new goals: science for meeting personal needs, science for resolving current societal issues, science for assisting with career choices, and science for preparing for further study.
