The Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Program funds innovative pre-kindergarten to grade 12 (P-12) science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and Informal Science Education (ISE) educational projects. The relationship between physics and mathematics is reviewed upgrading the common in physics classes’ perspective of mathematics as a toolkit for physics. The nature of the physics-mathematics relationship is considered along a certain historical path. The triadic hierarchical structure of discipline-culture helps to identify different ways in which mathematics is used in physics and to appreciate its contribution, to recognize the difference between mathematics and physics as disciplines in approaches, values, methods, and forms. We mentioned certain forms of mathematical knowledge important for physics but often missing in school curricula. The geometrical mode of codification of mathematical knowledge is compared with the analytical one in context of teaching school physics and mathematics; their complementarity is exemplified. Teaching may adopt the examples facilitating the claims of the study to reach science literacy and meaningful learning.

U.S. schools in recent years have been swept up in a widespread push to enhance STEM education, and never has the importance of scientific discoveries to everyday people been clearer than it is today Yet despite polls indicating that most Americans buy into STEM’s societal benefits, few Americans are confident about the quality of STEM education in the country’s K-12 schools, with 75 percent of respondents in a 2015 Pew survey of scientists attributing the public’s limited knowledge about science to schools’ underinvestment in such education. But even when educational opportunities exist, many children shun them because they don’t think they’re smart enough In particular, some studies have suggested that demographic stereotypes—the belief, particularly in affluent communities, that STEM-related jobs aren’t for women, for example, or the message perpetuated among low-income students of color that caring about academics isn’t masculine—discourage kids from pursuing those fields.

Kids usually form a basic opinion about the sciences shortly after beginning school. If this is a negative opinion, it can be hard to engage those students in science as they grow older. Engaging young students with exciting material and experiences motivates them to learn and pursue the sciences throughout school. Building scientific understanding in the general public requires understanding of the motivations and interests that bring people to science.
