The science curriculum in the elementary grades, like that for other subject areas, should be designed for all students to develop critical basic knowledge and basic skills, interests, and habits of mind that will lead to productive efforts to learn and understand the subject more deeply in later grades. If this is done well, then all five of the reasons to teach science will be well served. It is not necessary in these grades to distinguish between those who will eventually become scientists and those who will chiefly use their knowledge of science in making personal and societal choices. A good elementary science program will provide the basis for either path in later life.
Why is science education important in our schools? We are surrounded by technology and the products of science every day. Public policy decisions that affect every aspect of our lives are based in scientific evidence. And, of course, the immensely complex natural world that surrounds us illustrates infinite scientific concepts. As children grow up in an increasingly technologically and scientifically advanced world, they need to be scientifically literate to succeed.
Ideally, teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions. These skills are integral to every aspect of a student’s education and life, from school to career. With a graduate degree in science education such as the University of Texas at Arlington’s online Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in Science Education , teachers can use what they learn about science instruction techniques and curriculum design to advance science education and student learning as a whole.
You can combine the Master’s programma Educational Science and Technology with a teacher training programme. After your (Dutch) vwo degree, you can start the academic teacher training programme. The complete study route (teacher training programme + pre-Master + Master) takes four years to complete. You follow the teacher training programme at a higher academic level at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the Master’s programme Educational Science and Technology at the University of Twente.
