The Science Education MA aims to reflect contemporary theory in all aspects of practice in science education: international, formal and informal. In this programme, you will gain theoretical insights and practical skills in both formal and informal educational practices. Your science discipline will be put in a broader societal perspective, and you will develop your own views on how your discipline should be relevant to secondary education and to the public at large. The internships and the research project in science education and communication will support you to develop as a skillful practitioner as well as an innovator.
The Department of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute was created in 1968 by Prof. Amos De Shalit. Its main mission is to advance the field of science and mathematics education at large, and to advance science and mathematics education in Israel. A central goal of the department is to develop academic and practical leadership in mathematics and science education.
The science curriculum in the elementary grades, like that for other subject areas, should be designed for all students to develop critical basic knowledge and basic skills, interests, and habits of mind that will lead to productive efforts to learn and understand the subject more deeply in later grades. If this is done well, then all five of the reasons to teach science will be well served. It is not necessary in these grades to distinguish between those who will eventually become scientists and those who will chiefly use their knowledge of science in making personal and societal choices. A good elementary science program will provide the basis for either path in later life.

This programme is aimed at science teachers, museum educators, those working in all arenas of formal and informal science education at all levels, and anyone with a general interest in the subject.
Educational Design & Effectiveness is about learning and instruction in formal and informal settings, and effectiveness in schools. The National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences managed the first of two steps in the creation of the Next Generation Science Standards by developing the A Framework for K-12 Science Education , which was released July 2011.
