The Center for Mathematics and Science Education Research (CMSER) coordinates research, teacher education, curriculum development and implementation, and dissemination efforts in mathematics and science education, and fosters rich partnerships with educational institutions and organizations throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Opportunities for teachers to engage in professional learning and development can have a big impact on student learning. Students with good teachers can make progress twice as fast as those without. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job opportunities for post-secondary teachers were expected to grow by 19% from 2012 to 2022 (). In May 2014, post-secondary teachers who taught education-related subjects earned a mean annual income of $65,180, according to the BLS.

To assist students to make informed choices about their study, the Sydney School of Education and Social Work has identified inherent requirements for coursework-award courses in Secondary Education. In order to successfully complete such a course, students must possess these qualities and skills (PDF). Fully certified mathematics and science teachers were less prevalent in high-minority and high-poverty schools when compared with schools with students from higher-income families. For example, in 2011, 88% of mathematics teachers in high-poverty schools were fully certified, compared with 95% of those in low-poverty schools.
