This programme aims to give students the academic and practical skills they need to develop a critical understanding of the role of science education, research and communication in society. Eligible candidates may apply for admission to a rich postgraduate program with the Sydney School of Education and Social Work comprising advanced learning and professional courses. Master’s degrees include capstone independent research projects, supervised by experts in the field of study, which prepare students for higher degrees by research. A partnership between local K-8 schools and the University of Rhode Island’s School of Education, GEMS-Net has created a replicable model that enables superintendents, principals, and teachers develop concept understanding alongside practices and hands-on lessons that help young students learn science in an engaging and authentic context.
Yet, although they are nearly synonymous, scientific inquiry in schools is not always explicitly tied to problem-solving and critical thinking. The process students learn when creating, executing, evaluating and communicating the results of an experiment can be applied to any challenge they face in school, from proving a point in a persuasive essay to developing a photo in the darkroom. In this way, science is one of the most important subjects students study, because it gives them the critical thinking skills they need in every subject.
Informal science education is the science teaching and learning that occurs outside of the formal school curriculum in places such as museums, the media, and community-based programs. The National Science Teachers Association has created a position statement 49 on Informal Science Education to define and encourage science learning in many contexts and throughout the lifespan. Research in informal science education is funded in the United States by the National Science Foundation. 50 The Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) 51 provides resources for the informal science education community.
As an Educational Science and Technology student, you will take a high-tech approach to your studies while never losing sight of the human dimension. You will learn all about theories of learning and assessment, instructional design and implementation, theoretical foundations and practical applications of (technology-based) learning environments and interventions. You will also discover how to design different learning scenarios and curriculums, and how to translate your designs into recommendations and solutions to practical problems.
reSolve: Mathematics by Inquiry provides teaching and professional learning resources that support teaching mathematics through inquiry-based methods and help students learn mathematics in fun and innovative ways. Delivered by the Australian Academy of Science, reSolve: Mathematics by Inquiry resources target students from Foundation to Year 10 and are freely available to all Australian teachers.
